Weekly Photo Challenge: Symbol

Symbol

The club badge and symbol of Wingate & Finchley FC. Symbolic in itself, the badge contains four other symbols. In the bottom left hand corner is the Star of David – Representing the Wingate FC part of the club along with their motto across the centre, ‘Amicitias per Ludis’ (literally Friendship through Sport). In the top right is the Finch of Finchley FC which was also crest of the Municipal Borough of Finchley’s coat of arms. The top left hand corner carries the Saxon Crown and Three Seaxes of the County of Middlesex of which Finchley was once a part. Finally, the bottom right hand corner displays Hunting Horns – symbolic of the fact that Finchley Common was once the Hunting Grounds of the Bishop of London. A tri-corner hat and crossed pistols could have been equally relevant as Finchley Common was also a popular haunt for highwaymen! Perhaps the club should consider adding those as a crest above the shield 😉
