What counts as New?… My typed words were new a couple of seconds ago. The image I took on Saturday is a few days old… Is it still New? New is as subjective a term as Old. With that thought in mind I give you The Metal Box Building…
7381 at Reading (1975)
Built in 1974, and commissioned in 1975, Queen’s House in Reading was just a few months old and still being completed when I took this image – so it was New at the time. The building represented a new style of architecture and included many radical new features in its octagonal space. It became an icon of Reading and a source of fierce debate – people either loved it or hated it. Born white, it became very grey and last ditch efforts to make it a listed building failed. It was demolished in October 2014. I wonder if the next New building will be so Iconic?
